Graduate Medical Education at Carolinas Medical Center

Carolinas Healthcare System's graduate medical education program dates back to 1963 as Charlotte Memorial Hospital. The program has since grown to include 300+ residents and fellows in 28 residency programs. The faculty now includes 377 physicians.

Carolinas HealthCare System has partnered with the University of North Carolina School of Medicine to designate Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) as the university's Charlotte campus. CMC is one of only five designated academic medical centers in North Carolina. These programs reside within the Division of Medical Education, which is dedicated to the continuum of professional education and the development of excellent healthcare providers.

One of five teaching hospitals in North Carolina, Carolinas Medical Center is an exciting place for future primary care physicians and medical sub-specialists. CMC currently conducts residency programs in 28 medical and dental specialties and serves as an off-campus training site for three more. Along with Carolinas College of Health Sciences, CMC provides an educational environment for more than 1,000 residents, medical students, physician extenders, nursing students and other allied health professionals annually.

A History Of Innovation
The faculty of the Neurological Surgery Residency Training Program at Carolinas Medical Center are all members of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates. Established in 1940, it is one of the oldest, largest, and most innovative neurosurgical practices in the country. With a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons, physiatrists, and physical therapists, the practice offers comprehensive nonsurgical and surgical care for patients with brain and spine disorders. Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates is a leader in minimally invasive spine techniques, complex spine surgery, brain tumor treatment, neuroendovascular surgery, and pediatric neurosurgery. Practice surgeons have served as leaders on both local and national levels, from the American Board of Neurological Surgeons to hospitals in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Through research and participation in clinical trials, Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates seeks to advance the field of neurosurgery and open the door to new treatment possibilities. Past and current research studies include brain tumor protocols, vascular devices, artificial spinal discs, and injectable cell-based therapy for treatment of degenerative disc disease. The practice is also participating in a national outcomes database to help track and improve the quality of patient care.
